Behavior and Discipline
We will operate on the principles in the Scout Law at all times. You are expected to obey all reasonable requests of your leaders. REMEMBER - ATTITUDE IS A BIG PART OF SCOUT SPIRIT AND SCOUT SPIRIT IS A BIG PART OF ADVANCEMENT
TROOP 52 DISCIPLINE MANAGEMENT PLAN
We recognize that for our boys to grow into responsible men, they need to be held accountable for their actions. Therefore, any Scout who intentionally participates in an activity that has the potential to cause harm to him or other Troop members, or behaves in a manner that reflects negatively upon Troop 52, the Boy Scouts of America, or the chartered organization (Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church), will be disciplined. Behavior which is cause for disciplinary action includes, but is not limited to, the following:
1. Not following Scoutmaster's or Leader's (adult and/or youth) orders/instructions.
2. Significantly unsafe actions. -- endangers himself or others (i.e. drinking out of creeks, throwing rocks, fighting, etc.).
3. Exploring physical hazards without permission and supervision (lakes, creeks, cliffs, etc.)
4. Leaving designated areas without a leader's permission.
5. Use of cursing or foul language
6 Excessively rowdy, unruly, loud, disrespectful, disobedient, or disruptive behavior.
7. Physical or verbal hazing or harassment of another person.
8. Use of any controlled or illegal substance or tobacco.
9. Intentionally participates in any activity that may cause damage to public or private property.
We expect that with the policy clearly stated, scouts will know where they stand and be comfortable with an atmosphere of tolerance toward other's rights that helps build a secure feeling of trust and brotherhood in Scouting.
All inappropriate behavior of a minor nature will be handled by a Junior Leader Council with the overview of the Scoutmaster or designated Assistant Scoutmaster.
• First Offense will result in a warning. The Junior Leader in charge will discuss the infraction with the Scout at the time of violation, reminding him of the Scout Law and the Discipline Management Plan.
• Second Offense will result in additional counseling by the Junior Leader Council and assignment of a task or loss of privilege.
• Third Offense will result in a conference with the Adult Leader Disciplinary Board (ALDB). This includes the Scoutmaster, Adult Leader/ASM witnessing the offense(s), the Committee Chair. The scout and the scout's parent/guardian must attend. Additional discipline will be assigned as deemed appropriate by the ALDB with the Scoutmaster’s approval. The scout must complete the corrective action plan and time requirement deemed to remain in the troop.
It is understood that corporal punishment will not be used for discipline under any circumstances.
Misbehavior of a minor nature that is ongoing, in spite of attempts to correct the behavior, or any behavior deemed to be of a serious nature will be immediately referred to the Adult Leader Disciplinary Board (ALDB). Discipline will be progressive in nature unless the offense is deemed serious in nature. Depending on the nature of the behavior, and the Scout’s previous history, including attempts to deal with previous misbehavior will determine the outcome of the ALDB.
The Scoutmaster has the option of calling the Scout’s parent/guardian(s) to have the Scout immediately removed from a camp-out or meeting. Additionally, the Scoutmaster has the option of requiring the Scout's parent/guardian to attend the troop meetings with the Scout or suspend the Scout from all activities for an appropriate period of time. Suspensions must be reported to the Troop Committee, which would review the issue and approve the discipline plan. Re-instatement can only be achieved via a conference with the Troop Committee, the parent/guardian(s), and the Scout.
Any Scout exhibiting unacceptable behavior will not be allowed to have a Board of Review or have the Scout Spirit Requirement signed off for any rank advancement during his discipline period.
The Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters, under direction of the troop committee shall have the right and responsibility of dealing with individual discipline problems on a case by case basis. All disciplinary situations will be handled as consistently and fairly as possible.
